"The past two to three years, I was drawn to and started collecting old books, documents, ledgers and visual encyclopedias. I wanted to find a way to use some of the images in my work. After collecting for a while, I came to the realization that all the images and written material before me was really a metaphor for what I wanted to put across in my paintings - but it took quite a while before I found a way to use the materials in my paintings. One aspect of the fascination for me was the fact that some of these very old documents were hugely important to the person who authored or owned them and through time they became more or less old pieces of paper in an antique store. My paintings are documents now too. They are hugely important to me but where will they end up?"

David Rothermel was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He first studied at York Academy in York, PA. He later went on to study and graduate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia. Two of his summers were spent at Skowheagan School of Painting & Sculpture in Skowheagan, Maine.  Moving to New Mexico, in 1981, David took a job as an art director for an outdoor advertising company. His days were spent painting 10' x 40' billboards. His yearning for painting on a large scale was fulfilled until falling from scaffolding and breaking both arms.  This unfortunate event propelled him to reset his career back on track as a professional artist.  Along with the many solo gallery and museum exhibits, David's works are included in many pubic and private collections.  The artist currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM and Scottsdale, AZ.
